The history of net.art shows how artists used the internet in creative and rebellious ways to explore identity, politics, and connection. I think that it’s very telling of human nature how no matter what new technology comes out, people always find a way to use the technology to create art. I think that net.art is a great combination of STEM and art. I feel that this is a way to insert art into science. Nowadays, people have easy creation tools for websites like wix, but by coding the actual website, I’m assuming you have a lot more control over what to do and what you can add into your website. For example there are a lot of online games that you could not create with something like wix.
I don’t exactly know what the details of this quote is: "Originally conceived as an alternative social field where art and everyday life were merged, net.art may now seem threatened by its own success—that is, likely to give in to its own increasing institutionalization." But to me, when I think of niche creations becoming popular, I feel what happens very often is that either large corporations go after it, seeking to commercialize it, or because of demands, the creators need money to meet the demands and therefore start to appeal to larger audiences rather than doing what they want to do. I’m assuming that this is what happened to art.net as when it talks about this quote. The website started to drift from its free reign more towards television or whatever other constrictions.
I think in general net.art’s history is a good reminder to keep art open, experimental, and independent in both the digital world and in art and whatever new technologies in general.
Digital Art that I made
I was restricted, I could only use black text on white background. I had to experiement and explore with all of my ideas.
