Artist Statement

Initially when I first was ideating for this project, I was stuck between wanting to create a sound that was scary and perturbing and wanting to create a sound that was common soothing. After I collected my samples, I really liked the coyote howling that I got. I decided to lean more into this sound and create something more scary. However, I really liked the sound of the computer typing, which is something a lot more soothing, but I didn't quite know what to do with it yet.  I had a lot of trouble figuring out how long my peace was, as it would say that it was a certain time in the file, but when I would export it it would be a different time. This caused a lot of problems for me when I was making the peace as I had to constantly change what I had  thought was a finished piece so it would fit the time. These cuts made me start to lean more heavily on the typing sound that I chose. I really like how soothing the sound of keyboard clicks is and so I decided to create something that was both a little creepy and calming at the same time. Because of this, I also wanted to incorporate silence into my sound. I think silence is something I really value, and as we learned from John Cage, there is no such thing as real silence. I had hoped that the strange pigeon sound that I chose would be a little bit unsettling, but I think in the end it turned out to be a little more ridiculous and silly. Overall I think I was able to create a sound that felt kind of slow and felt a little unending. I think this was because while I was making it I had a lot of work I had to do and my feelings of non-stop work, tiredness, panic, and a few moments of calm was able to subconsciously make it through to this piece that I made.
